Free transport helps young people attend valuable service

A free youth transport service is set to launch on Friday 28 February, providing more young people with the opportunity to attend Haslemere’s A Place to be Youth Club.

The collaboration between Waverley hoppa Community Transport and A Place to Be has been made possible by a free transport initiative which is being run by hoppa.

Richard Davies, General Manager at hoppa says: “In 2024, we received a grant from the government’s UK Prosperity Fund so we could run a pilot to see whether free transport enables more young people to take part in activities which in turn reduce the impact of isolation and loneliness in the younger generation. This partnership with A Place to Be is a perfect example of how free transport can meet a need, and we are pleased to be able to provide this service for young people in Haslemere.”

The hoppa bus will pick up young passengers from four locations which include Hindhead crossroads, Shottermill Ponds, the High Street and High Lane Park. The hoppa driver will drop off the young people outside Haslemere Youth Club and then return to pick them up at the end of their youth club session.

Chloe Adam, Youth Leader at A Place to Be says: “A lack of transport is one of the key reasons young people are unable to take part in organised activities. I hope this free pick up and drop off service for 10- to 14-year-olds will encourage more young people from Hindhead, Shottermill, Camelsdale and Haslemere to come along and access support and activities safely and at no cost to their families.”
